Description
This is a full-time, project Microbiologist 1 position located within the Division of Disease Control & Health Statistics’ Environmental Microbiology Laboratory. This project position is currently funded until June 30, 2023.
As a
Microbiologist 1, you will be responsible for:
SARS-CoV-2 testing in wastewater.
Environmental Legionella and West Nile testing.
Marine water quality testing for the Shellfish Program.
Sample accessioning, inventory, and sample preparation.
This position will also perform basic tasks in monitoring equipment, restocking the laboratory with supplies, general housekeeping and other duties as needed by the lead scientists in the laboratories, and assisting with reporting and filing of the results of the analyses.
This position is required to have an on-site presence at the Shoreline, WA duty station.

Duties Include
Performing routine molecular testing for SARS-CoV2, Legionella, West Nile virus.
Performing quality control of new reagents and controls and on various types of media used for the bacteriological testing of marine and drinking water.
Performing routine standardized bacteriological testing of marine water samples for presence of Total and Fecal coliforms.
Performing routine testing of drinking water using various standardized methods for presence of Total and Fecal coliforms including specific test methods for E. coli and other waterborne microorganisms.
Analyzing sterilization monitoring lest strips from PHL and other local health laboratories to ensure sterility effectiveness of autoclaves.
Performing proficiency tests on methods used in drinking and marine water bacteriological analysis.
Performing test results data entry into the Water lab databases using LIMS, performing calculations, preparing reports for reviewer’s signature, and sending reports to sample submitters.

Required Qualifications
Option 1: A bachelor’s degree or higher in Microbiology.
OR
Option 2: A bachelor’s degree or higher in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell biology, Biology, or another basic medical science, WHICH INCLUDES 20 or more semester hours or quarter hours equivalent in microbiology, or a subject related to the study of microorganisms.
Desired Qualifications
One (1) or more years of experience with qPCR and/or ddPCR.
One (1) or more years of experience with bacterial isolation and identification.
Note: Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through live experience, volunteer experience, formal professional employment, or a combination.

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

Perform colorimetric analyses.
Work with highly pathogenic organisms.

Undergo vaccinations as determined and required by management.
Use appropriate PPEs including gloves, respiratory protection and laboratory gown during laboratory work. May require selected applicant to be fitted for a respirator which will require individual to pass a medical evaluation and training. Both the evaluation and training are provided by DOH.
Wear appropriate laboratory daily attire.
Stand for four (4) continuous hours while processing samples.
Occasionally travel, in and/or out of state, for training and conferences.
Participate in emergency response activities and when the Agency Coordination Center is activated.
