JOB TITLE: TEACHER DEPARTMENT: Intergenerational Child Care REPORTS TO: Lead Teacher FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY OF PURPOSE AND GOALS:
The Intergenerational Child Care Center Assistant Teacher works under the Lead Teacher. The Assistant Teacher works closely with other program staff to support their work with children and at times works independently in planning and implementing activities for the children. S/he is familiar with Center policies, procedures and philosophy as well as licensing laws and regulations. The Assistant Teacher helps to maintain an orderly, secure, and mentally stimulating environment for children. This is accomplished through organizational skills, patience, sense of humor, and a joyful approach toward others. S/he is expected to take advantage of books and other educational resources to learn more about the developmental stages and needs of the children served and the older adults with whom the children interact.
The focus of this position is working with and through others, building and maintaining relationships, and working closely and accurately within established guidelines. There is a need for an effective communicator, someone who is able to stimulate and motivate others while being aware of and responsive to their needs and concerns. There will be many different people to meet and work with. The person in this position must be friendly and genuinely interested in the business, agenda, and needs of others, including the company, its management, the team, the company’s customers, or all of the above. A persuasive, teaching style of communication is required to communicate the company’s policies, programs, and systems. A faster-than-average pace will be the norm for this position. Detail work is a major focus of the job, and those details need to be handled quickly, correctly, and efficiently. This portion of the work will often focus on relationships with others; correct handling of details dealing with others is necessary to maintain and grow relationships. If the job involves managing others, following up carefully, closely, and cheerfully is required to ensure both correct work and maintenance of the relationships. Necessary corrections must be made in a constructive, supportive manner. As time is usually a factor, the work must be done on time, as well as correctly. In general, this is a position where guidelines, structure, and established policies must be followed fairly closely, while working with and for others.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
CURRICULUM AND CARE: assists in preparing the infant curriculum and plans for age appropriate activities and diversity; assists the Lead Teacher in implementing the daily routine; works with small groups of infant children in specific curriculum areas as specified by the Lead Teacher; oversees children’s play; implements activities in the centers; serves as a role model for children, volunteers and parents; is conscientious in providing care for physical needs such as nutrition, diaper changes, exercise, and sleep; provides emotional support, praise and instructions to children in a genuine and caring manner.
INTERGENERATIONAL ACTIVITIES: works with the Lead Teacher and other classroom staff to implement intergenerational activities for the benefit of Bayview residents and children.
SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT: monitors supply levels and equipment conditions and advises the Lead Teacher when reordering or maintenance is needed.
SAFETY: is constantly alert for children’s safety and implements or recommends safety interventions as appropriate.
POLICY COMPLIANCE: is familiar with, adheres to, and informs others of the Center’s policies, procedures and philosophy.
BAYVIEW COMMUNITY: contributes through words and actions to the development of a cohesive, ethical, congenial and multicultural workforce; supports Bayview’s commitment to providing high quality services in an enriching, cost-effective, spiritual, caring and dignified social environment.
OTHER: complies with applicable laws and regulations including the state criminal background check; attends mandatory meetings and inservice training programs; adheres to Bayview’s policies and procedures; respects the confidentiality of information relating to residents, children, families, staff, and sensitive business information; cooperates with annual tuberculosis testing and/or symptom screening; responds appropriately to emergency situations using knowledge and skills to protect the well-being of one’s self and others; performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and Skill
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
College level courses towards earning an Associate of Arts Degree or a Child Development Associate Degree preferred.
Demonstrated willingness to continue attending educational offerings.
Prior experience working with infants.
Meets or exceeds the minimum licensing requirements for certifications (i.e., CPR, HIV/AIDS, First Aid, Food Handlers Permit).
Must be 18 years of age.
Treats parent/child information in a confidential manner.
Possesses good communication skills.
Possesses good problem solving skills.
Demonstrates a good sense of humor, warmth and caring attitude.
Supervision Received
Is supervised directly by the Lead Teacher.
Receives performance appraisals from the Program Supervisor.
Receives guidance from the Program Supervisor and Intergenerational Child Care Center Director.
Judgment and Mental Demands
Must treat each child, resident, parent and employee with respect and dignity and maintain a professional and caring attitude.
Must constantly be promoting child safety and watching for unsafe circumstances and conditions.
Required to develop and use appropriate prevention, and intervention if needed, to eliminate the need for child discipline.
Required to remain patient and calm, acting appropriately in emergency situations.
Personal Contacts
Is in constant contact with children who may present a wide variety of questions and requests.
Is in frequent contact with coworkers and children’s family members who may present a wide variety of questions, requests, and recommendations or who may need to be provided with information regarding a child or programs.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Lifts, carries, pushes, pulls lightweight (up to 15 lbs.) equipment or supplies much of the day.
Occasionally may push a transport wagon which has the capacity of holding 6 to 8 infants or waddlers.
Occasional physical effort with medium heavy (15-45 lbs) objects or children, for example, lifting children.
May work in awkward or strained positions for short periods.
Sits, stands, walks intermittently in an active indoor and outdoor environment.
Is occasionally exposed to one or more mildly unpleasant physical conditions or odors (diapers, injured or ill child, etc.). (Gloves are available for infection control.)
