Overview

Job Summary:

Physician Assistant should demonstrate an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical and technical competency, sound clinical judgment, professionalism as it relates to interpersonal and general communication skills, timely and compliant documentation and takes responsibility for ongoing professional development and competency validation. Works directly and in collaboration with the Pulmonary/ Critical Care Medicine team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Obtain and preform history and physical examinations
Record and interpret pertinent data (i.e., labs, diagnostic studies, discharge summaries, progress notes, etc.)
Write orders under supervision of a licensed physician
Formulate and implement treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated primary supervising physician and/or attending back up physician(s).
Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions. Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.
Participate in multi-disciplinary rounds.
Maintain communication with patients and families regarding ongoing medical care and supportive needs.
Perform technical skills and other medical acts as delegated by the supervising physician when hospital requirements have been satisfied such as central lines, thoracentesis, and intubations.
Serve as a resource for nursing staff and other members of the health care team.
Actively participate in conferences and presentations as well as other staff education including but not limited to quality improvements initiatives as directed.
Preform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
Report any unsafe activities to supervisor in a timely manner, including conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees patients and visitors.
Perform other related duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements

Physician Assistant must complete Physician Assistant program and must be Certified.
Candidate must be appropriately licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of KY as appropriate.
At least one year of inpatient medicine or ICU experience preferred.
BLS/ACLS Certification

Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician. Conducts complete physicals, provides treatment and counsel patients. May in some cases prescribe medication.

Responsibilities

Participates in the overall care of patients as needed. Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition. Obtain, compile and record patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination.
Makes tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients.
Assist physician with patient rounds, documenting patents status/progress.
Review medication regimens and responds to refill and medication requests.
Administer or order diagnostic tests.
“Other duties as assigned by management.”

Qualifications

Successful completion of an education program for physician assistants or surgeon assistants program accredited by the American Medical Association’s Committee on Allied Health Education and has passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Current Licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Kentucky. Credentials and work history credible for malpractice coverage in Kentucky.

Maintains current knowledge and skills in the Physicians Assistant field.
Participates in educational programs to enhance clinical/ experience.
Maintains Licensure and education requirements for Physician Assisting.
Recognizes his/her limits of knowledge and experience, planning for situations beyond his/her expertise, and
collaborating with or referring to other healthcare providers as appropriate.
Has knowledge of the statutes and regulations governing Physicians Assistant practice, and functions within those legal boundaries.
