Job Summary
The University of Kentucky College of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of vice dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The College of Medicine Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion represents the broad definition of diversity, which includes identity, perspective, race/ethnicity, socio-economic, religion, geography, international, LGBTQ* status, gender, disability, etc. The vice dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion will provide oversight for all diversity, equity, and inclusion activities that support medical students, graduate and PhD students, residents, fellows, and faculty and staff members of the College of Medicine, which include the Lexington, Bowling Green, Morehead, and Northern Kentucky campuses.
The vice dean will execute and update the strategic diversity and inclusion plan for the College of Medicine that is consistent with the University of Kentucky’s strategic initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and includes plans for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority, disadvantaged, and rural learners and faculty.
Through quantitative and qualitative means, the vice dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion will assess the college climate, both in small and large group settings, and create and implement needed face-to-face and web-based resources that advance signature diversity programs and initiatives that align with the college’s broad definition of diversity.
The vice dean will take the lead role in creating an inclusive academic environment that impacts the educational, clinical care, and research environments in the college. The vice dean will work collaboratively with the University’s Vice President for Institutional Diversity in the development of inter-professional programs and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide oversight for administrative, business, financial, and reporting functions to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Provide leadership, management, support, guidance, and strategic focused direction to direct and indirect reports (which includes a growing network of Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors).
Work with senior management and the budget office to ensure resource allocations are adequate to achieve diversity/equity/inclusion/engagement goals.
Build on and implement plans and policies to foster an inclusive environment and culture that clearly supports, and encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels: medical students, graduate students, fellows, residents, faculty, and staff (working in collaboration with the College of Medicine Offices of Faculty Affairs and Development, Research, Graduate Medical Education, Biomedical Education, and Medical Education).
Collaborate with senior leadership, department chairs, faculty, learners, residents, fellows, staff, and other constituent groups internal and external to the UK College of Medicine to achieve the strategic plan and diversity goals.
Promote organizational and interdisciplinary collaboration among College of Medicine programs that will enhance inclusive excellence.
Develop and maintain educational and web-based resources to promote and encourage reflection of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the College of Medicine.
Coordinate diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts with UK Office of Institutional Diversity.
Collaborate with colleges, units, and UK HealthCare to align to a shared diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy. Create and assist in implementing consistent practices, coordinate implementation activities, and optimize resources while also amplifying existing efforts and accelerating progress toward intended strategic outcomes.
Collaborate on College of Medicine initiatives designed to recruit, retain, support, and ensure the success and advancement of underrepresented, disadvantaged, and minoritized students, trainees, faculty, and staff populations (working with the College of Medicine Offices of Research, Faculty Affairs and Development, Biomedical Education, Graduate Medical Education, and Medical Education).
Build and develop meaningful metrics, tools and analytics that enable leadership to evaluate progress on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts
Facilitate access to counseling, mediation, and conflict resolution regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion related issues for students, residents, faculty, and staff.
Assist education leaders within the College of Medicine to meet diversity-related components of accreditation guidelines (Liaison Committee on Medical Education and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education).
Serve as Chair of the College of Medicine Diversity & Inclusion Work Group to advise and make recommendations to the College of Medicine Dean on issues relative to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Build a strategic partnership with College of Medicine communications to develop and highlight diversity, equity, and inclusion in the vision, goals, efforts, testimonials, etc., for both internal and external staff audiences and potential candidates in the recruitment process.
Cultivate and strengthen relationships with various community, civic, and professional organizations to foster collaborations that advance diversity, belonging, inclusion, equity, and engagement initiatives between the college and local communities (including the communities surrounding our regional campuses).
Demonstrate excellent communication abilities (listening, speaking, and writing) and interpersonal skills.
