IT Systems Administrator (Journey)

Permanent, Full Time

The Information Technology (IT) division provides services to all other divisions in the office and includes external customers for some divisions. This position maintains expertise in a wide range of technology and their application to our customers.
This position reports to the Systems Administration/Senior Supervisor for the Office of the Secretary of State (OSOS). It is located within the Information Technology division and is responsible for the administration of the office server environment which spans all of Western Washington. Duties include server operating system installation, configuration, management, space allocation, data storage, critical system backup, SQL Server management, and Exchange email system administration. Further duties include the configuration, management, and operation of the office Wide Area Network (WAN) connections.

Duties

Duties: Provides for the administration of office server environment (file, application, Exchange, SQL, print, web):

Serves as the main point of contact for, and provides the administration of, all installed systems located within OSOS managed server facilities, the State Data Center (SDC), and the Quincy Data Center (QDC)
Administers the server environment, including the allocation of disk storage using industry best practices and methodologies
Designs, manages, and implements new server hardware installations and secure server operating system setups, including MS Exchange server, MS SQL server, and virtual server environments
Manages the office data backup and recovery systems using industry best practices and software suites
Ensures all servers and server software are kept up-to-date (Microsoft releases, Hot Fixes, Cumulative updates (CUs), virus scan, applications software and firmware updates)
Replaces defective server hardware as needed (power supplies, hard drives, fans, system boards, removable media, and expansion cards or hardware)
Works closely with the office applications development teams on all server and system updates, ensuring minimal system and end-user downtime

Daily management of the office network connections (State Government Network (SGN), Public Government Network (PGN):

Operates and maintains the office intrusion detection and prevention systems (firewalls)
Provides technical expertise in the securing of all OSOS electronic assets. Reports all network security issues to the OSOS Security Operations Center (SOC) for review and remediation
Manages and maintains office network switches – including the management of specialized monitoring software
Examines all network monitoring software suites to provide the office with secure network and server environments
Works with Washington Technical Solutions (WaTech) on office network connectivity issues (circuit upgrades, network outages, service calls)

Provides critical backup for office servers and systems:

Manages and maintains office tape drives and robotic tape libraries
Provides for backup and restoration of critical data
Manages offsite data storage
Makes recommendations on the replacement of old technologies (tape versus spinning disk backup, etc.)

Miscellaneous:

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Four years of information technology experience such as designing, installing, and maintaining security systems, including network firewalls, advanced intrusion detection and prevention hardware and related software, consulting, analyzing, designing, installing and/or maintaining server hardware and robotic tape backup systems, and network infrastructure equipment (or AA degree and three years of experience)
Efficiently use a personal computer and applicable software to successfully perform the essential functions of the position
Ability to read and write the English language

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or related field
Experience installing, operating and maintaining Microsoft server operating systems
Experience managing Microsoft Exchange email server software
Experience working in data centers

Working Conditions:
In this position, the incumbent works primarily in an office environment where sitting for long periods of time and extensive use of the keyboard is required. The standard work hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM though work can be required outside of standard hours to include evenings, weekends, and holidays, particularly when emergency situations arise. Coordination of personal work schedule with that of the team may be required to ensure consistent availability. Regular travel to local offices is required. The incumbent must have the ability to move and maneuver objects weighing approximately 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation. The incumbent must also be able to listen attentively, identify issues, provide options, address requests and resolve complaints or conflicts. The incumbent in this position must be able to represent the Office of the Secretary of State in a competent, confident, and professional manner, including professional dress.
